The New Mexico Corrections Department appreciates the hard work and dedication of our faithful volunteers who serve our incarcerated and those returning from prison to the community. Our volunteers are an invaluable resource to our department as they provide hope, examples of neighbors who care, reduce recidivism and help to make our community a safer and better place. This section of our website will include contact information on our chaplains who are the key point persons for our institutional volunteer programs and information on the participating ministries & volunteer groups.

We recognize the priority of our volunteers having access to relevant training materials that will assist them serve with confidence in the prisons and that will also assist them in the recruitment of friends who are interested in becoming volunteers. Toward that end, our revised volunteer handbook is provided as a training resource to fulfill our goal of providing standardized training materials for all of our state and private prison volunteers.

We appreciate your investment in the lives of the men and women in our prisons and trust that the handbook will be a resource that you can use as a handy reference guide. Feel free to make copies as needed.

Crossings Living Unit Volunteers

Faith-based programming in the New Mexico Corrections Department is designed to help the inmates involved to establish or strengthen a relationship with God;

  • To learn to live in a faith community
  • To help them overcome hurts, addictive habits and hang-ups
  • To strengthen family relationships
  • To form new relationships within the Christian community

Volunteers from the Christian community are a critical part of the programming. They teach and model a lifestyle that will help the inmates accomplish these objectives.

Our goal is to encourage these men and women to become involved in similar programming in the local community upon release from prison. As they begin to be involved in a local faith community, they will be encouraged to remain free from the criminal activity and bring satisfying relationships to themselves and their families.

There are several units in operation at the present time by Crossings Inc a non-profit, volunteer based corporation. Volunteers are staffing the programs four nights a week. For information concerning volunteer opportunities please contact the Director of Faith-based Programming 505.382.6917.

Crossing Prison Ministry is a formally recognized program within the New Mexico Corrections Department. It began over 13 years ago at the request of the Secretary of Corrections. It started at the Southern New Mexico Corrections Facility but is now an active program inside three of the 10 New Mexico state prisons. It utilizes all-volunteer instructors and inmates who attend classes four nights per week over an 18-month period. It utilizes a Christian, biblically-based curriculum and receives no funding from any public agency.
